On Tuesday, March 10, 2009, there was a standing room only crowd for the first DLC 789 membership meeting of the year. In addition to reports from our Officers we had a “State of the Union” address by Yvonne Walker, President of SEIU Local 1000 and a presentation on “Change That Works” by Melvin Stewart, representing SEIU International. Ms. Walker told us that the Local 1000 Council’s strategic planning meeting last December was a turning point to move the union forward and change the face of California. We need to be relevant to our members and to the public. She talked about volunteering in the community and the union endorsement of Cathy Hackett for a seat on the CalPERS board. Melvin Stewart fully engaged our members while talking about the “Employee Free Choice Act” and had us write letters to Senator Feinstein during his presentation. Even though we have a union we need to make sure our friends and families have the same opportunities.
